About One Acre Woods

Ecosystem regeneration and mindful living

As in many other cities, the suburbs of metro Atlanta have exploded in the last few decades, encroaching on both agricultural land and secondary forests. One way to mitigate this habitat destruction is to steward suburban land in a manner that mimics the natural ecosystems as well as produces a sustainable yield.

My one acre of land in Cherokee County is within Georgia’s Southern Inner Piedmont (ecoregion 45a) in an area that naturally develops into oak-hickory forests. Some of the other indigenous trees include loblolly pines, sweetgums, tulip poplars, dogwoods, and sourwoods. Our neighborhood stream, a tributary of the Little River, runs out of such a forest and its clear, clean water allows dusky salamanders to thrive.

This site provides a way to share my observations and work as I explore ways to better understand and enjoy a life in partnership with both the endemic and imported plants, animals, and fungi around us.

My inspiration comes from the environment itself as well as from the ideas and work of Thich Nhat Hanh, the Holzer family, Masanobu Fukuoka, Ben Falk, Richard Walker, Phil Williams, Liz Graznak, Andrew Adams, the Foxfire project, Cascada de las Ánimas and many others.
